We
are very fortunate to welcome Mipham Rinpoche, the father of the
Gyalwa Karmapa. The
third Mipham Rinpoche is one of today's great scholars and masters
of the Nyingma tradition. In 1959, when Mipham Rinpoche was ten years old, the official dharma practice became impossible in Tibet because of the political changes. However, due to a grave illness, Mipham Rinpoche was permitted to remain in his monastery, Junyung Gompa. There he concentrated on his Buddhist education in philosophy and meditation. He spent 13 years in retreat and practiced during this time, among many other practices, a total of 2000 Nyungne-fasting rituals on the 1000-armed Chenresig. Later Mipham Rinpoche obtained the permission to rebuild the Junyung Gompa monastery. He invited the 10th Panchen Rinpoche and other masters to the monastery. The former advised him on the rebuilding and Mipham Rinpoche dedicated his time to the restoration for as long as his health permitted. Having suffered from a paralytic stroke he left Tibet in 1994 to receive further medical treatment. Together with him were his sons: his oldest son is the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Thaye Dorje, the younger one is the tulku of Sönam Tsemo Rinpoche. Today Mipham Rinpoche lives together with his wife in Dehradun in India.
