Private visit of the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa to Dhagpo Kagyu Ling. July 2005

During the Gyalwa Karmapa’s 2005 European tour, he paid a private visit to his parents, who were staying at Dhagpo Kagyu Ling.

On Friday July 22, 2005, the 17th Karmapa Thaye Dorje arrived at the Brive airport, where he was received by Jigme Rinpoche, Khenpo Chödrak, Lama Puntso and Drupla Roland. He was accompanied by Nendo Rinpoche, Umze Yeshe and Tsültrim Namgyal.

Despite the private nature of his visit, many people awaited His Holiness in the Dhagpo courtyard. The Gyalwa Karmapa was welcomed in the traditional way, with the eight auspicious symbols decorating the ground, and the sound of gyalings announcing his arrival. His mother Mayum, was the first to greet her son with a white scarf of salutation.

The Gyalwa Karmapa blessed the crowd on his way to greet his father, Mipham Rinpoche.

The Karmapa’s short visit took place in a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. Most of his time was spent with his parents. For practitioners at the centre, it was a great blessing and inspiration to know that the Karmapa was so close-by.

Meanwhile, the Karmapa's ritual master, Umze Yeshe, devoted several hours a day to training practitioners in the rituals, mudras, chanting, and in the playing of instruments. The Karmapa's father, Mipham Rinpoche, continued his teaching program in the evenings.

At 5 :30am on July 28th, the Karmapa, his parents and entourage, left Dhagpo Kagyu Ling for the airport at Brive: The Karmapa travelled to Germany, while Mipham Rinpoche and Mayum travelled to Spain.

The staff at Dhagpo continue to prepare for the Karmapa's more official visit in mid-August. More than 1500 people are expected to attend.
